چکیده

Soil fertility depletion due to land degradation and poor cropping diversity have resulted in crop yield sub-Saharan Africa. On-farm experiments were conducted determine the effects of conservation agriculture (CA)-based maize (Zea mays L.)–legume systems conventional tillage (CT) on soil properties maize. The laid out a randomized complete block design with three replications. continued for 3 yr from 2012 2014. treatments were: CT monoculture (CT-M), CA (CA-M), CA-based maize–common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) intercropping (CA-M+CB), maize–cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (CA-M+CP) rotation (CA-M–CB).Weed infestation maize–legume reduced over years. Application increased organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus (Ava.P), water infiltration rate by 37, 54, 12.3, 327%, respectively, CT-M. Maize grain 54% CA-M–CB CT. highest production efficiency was obtained CA-M–CB. In conclusion, followed best management practices as elucidated higher stable yield. However, future research should be executed under various agro-ecologies types.

Maize (Zea mays L.).

Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation is an effective method for introducing genes into maize. In this chapter, we describe a detailed protocol for genetic transformation of the maize genotype Hi II. Our starting plant material is immature embryos cocultivated with an Agrobacterium strain carrying a standard binary vector. In addition to step-by-step laboratory transformation proced...

Epistasis in Maize (zea Mays

ISHER (1918) provided a framework for the characterization of genotypic variance whereby he partitioned it into three components: ( 1 ) a portion associated with the average effects of genes, (2) a portion associated with dominance effects (allelic interactions) of genes, and (3) a portion associated with epistatic effects (nonallelic interactions) of genes. A logical method for the further sub...

Weed Composition in Maize (zea Mays L.) Fields under Smallholder Conservation Farming

Smallholder farmers in southern Africa have reported on increased labour requirements for hoe weeding due to high weed infestations in conservation farming (CF) fields. However, CF proponents claim that weed pressure and labour requirements for weeding decrease within the first three years under the recommended CF practices. An observational study was carried out during the 2008/09 cropping sea...

Cloning and expression analysis of hemoglobin genes from maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) and teosinte (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis).

With the exception of barley and rice, little is known about the existence of hemoglobins (Hbs) in cereals. This work reports the cloning and analysis of hb genes from maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) and teosinte (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis). Coding sequences of maize and teosinte hb genes (hbm and hbt, respectively) are highly similar to each other and are interrupted by three introns located at ide...
